In my haste to pack up and leave the library (as miss iris says the next bus is coming soon), i accidentally switched off someone else’s laptop power instead of mine before plugging out the power cord.

first thought was, “oh sh*t, hope that laptop had battery in it” before glancing up. The lady whose laptop was affected looked down, meaning her laptop was interrupted. (oops. no battery. sh*t) its power supply was cut off, causing it to shut down. quickly apologised and expected to be screamed at. surprisingly, she didnt get angry and shrugged it off with a slight smile. wow.

while scurrying for a hole to hide in, i wondered what would my reaction be if i was in her position.

how do you get around sg? Drive? Taxi? bus and mrt? i try to take buses as i’d usually purchase student bus concession for 30 days unlimited rides.

hardcopies of street directory and bus guide are my partners in crime for exploring unfamiliar places.

recently discovered gothere.sg , and it’s fast becoming my favourite directory site for finding my way around.

type in your from and to locations, and the website generates a route on its map and states the directions for getting there by driving, taxi, bus and mrt or bus only.
so far i’ve tried the directions for bus and mrt and buses only, and it generally works great.

whats great:

  • tells you approximate time and costs of trip, even for taxi rides!
  • no need know postal code of locations, it works with general names like vivocity, bugis etc
  • bus only option allows me to make full use of bus concession (though travel times are usually much longer)
  • bus stops appear on the map and clicking on them shows what buses goes to that bus stop

however the system only gives one suggestion per route, ie only suggests one bus from point A to point B even when there’s more buses or alternative routes to get to point B.

Tip: The A and B green pointers on the map can be adjusted! Just click and drag them to set new from/to points. Quite cool.

had been waiting for this particular high tech pasar malam with unusual anticipation. unusual bcos even though they happen 4 times a year, the last one i went to was before flying off for exchange. my desktop hdd died along with my photos and precious documents. 1 40gb portable hdd died too. need to get my hands on hdds as i now learnt the importance of backing up files. hdd have a limited lifespan, sad fact. they’d died sooner or later. was also looking for a good powered usb hub and laptop cooler.

the week the fair happened was also the deadline for one my reports to be handed up. and the uni open house (which i part timed in) happened on the sat of the fair. didnt planned for that cos previously the emails were saying the open house was on the 21st instead.

planned for this fair with much enthusiasm; surfed the forums for floor plans and pricelists etc. even marked the floor plan and uploaded on ipod touch:

there was much hooha about “carrot cutting” vendors who marked up their product prices by 20% and discounting 10% off. or morons who were shouting “last 5 sets!” in the first few hours and repeating the last 5 sets announcements every hour -_-”‘ .. ppl were complaining about the items they bought were at the market price rather than the bargain they thought they were getting, and having to squeeze in the crowd to get them somemore. that’s why need to do research about product specs, market prices and existing promos before visiting these pasar malams ma.

one thing i noticed was wd hdd prices usually were much cheaper in these fairs than the current market prices, and their prices drop each fair:

above are prices for SITEX 2008..

compared with IT Fair 2009

the 640gb mybook home edition is $40 cheaper now! (169.90 vs 119.90) initially after coming back from overseas trip i thought of buying at least two hdd, one for storage and another for time machine. but the thing about hdd is their prices depreciate over time, so i guess shud only buy what is needed at the moment.

another interesting thing happened in the fair:

me : i was kind of stuck at one booth due to crowd. as i was walking slowly past the booth, got 1 sales guys asked me, antivirus software for u sir?
me : as i walked past him, i turned my head ard and said
me : i use a mac
me : am i an a-hole?
me : hahaha
the general: hahahah
the general : i do things like that also… so i think it’s ok… haha
me : that my natural response to the qn in my head
me : but a slight grin formed on my face

heh.

saw this random lady tying up her hair with a pen on a bus (ie like in the pic above but with a pen). Wow. one of those supernatural abilities ladies have?

No buttons except for a top toggle for Off/Play/Shuffle. Relies on original ipod earphone buttons, which imho isnt the best earphones out there. For better sound maybe can get the Apple In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic which costs as much as the Shuffle (S$128). The voice over function intrigues me the most though. Chinese is supported (Japanese too) but i really wonder how well it’d work out. And ideally i would very much like to have different voices to choose from for different tones.. Will get sick of just one set of voice pretty soon.

1. Put your iTunes/Napster/Zune Player/WinAmp/etc on shuffle.
2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer.
3. YOU MUST WRITE THAT SONG NAME DOWN NO MATTER HOW SILLY IT SOUNDS!
4. Tag 10 or more friends

Missed this excellent series while on exchange studies. Aired in Oct 2008 i think. Saw part of one episode on tvmobile while on the way home after a particularly long thursday and was very much intrigued. On repeat Sundays 130pm to 230 pm Ch8. Catch it if you can.

Feb, 2006. For the past five months I have been living alone in a car at the edge of the woods — jobless and homeless and totally unable to find a way out. I can’t sing, I can’t dance, I can’t scream loudly enough, alI I can do is write. So here I am laying down tracks…hopefully the start of an online paper trail out of here.
